Have found his birth on BMD as Dec 1881 so he won't be on the 1881 Census, but I wonder where he was now on the 1891 - another search !!!

This is what I have found as well as possible death.

Also there is another son John Baston - on 1901 living with grandparents b1881 Buckland. Trans error on the 1901 census shown as Basham

May be the 1881 is a very bad mistrans. I was hoping you would say he was a soldier which would account for them being missing.

You are right in as much as it is partly guess work - after finding the Baston boy with the grandparents in 1891, I checked for a marriage for Anne Hicks and found a match with John Baston, right area. If I could have found any of them on the 1881 census I may have been able to confirm my assumptions. Perhaps as you say it will be necessary to get birth and marriage certificate to clairfy to be able to move forward.

I did find possible marriage for Edward BMD 1914 to Martha Hedges and possile death for him 1922, and a remarriage for Martha in 1924, but again this is only assumptions and not confirmed with certificates.

How have you worked out who his parents are then Linda? If you have never found them with him? Is it guess work re the 13 year old Baston boy with the Hicks family in Wilts?

When did the boy Edward marry?

Have you ever found John Baston on a census?

There are a couple of births which could be other children, but not confirmed.

Next Census I have found is 1891 with Edward living with grandparents. Nothing for parents - there is possible death for Jane, but not confirmed.

The 1881 census may help to confirm any additional children or if Jane was still alive. I just can't seem to find any of them.

Im supposing that the couple you have found are the same couple who are the parents of Edward - you do have his birth cert for mums name?

Perhaps Im getting the wrong end of the stick but:

you cant find Edward and his parents on the 1881?

You can only find Edward with his grandparents on 1891?

and you cant find either parent after that?

So you have never actually had the parents together with Edward? Did they have any other kids? What is Johns occupation on the birth cert or marriage cert?

No middle name that have found - I saw this one as well.

Does Ann have a middle name - or am I clutching at straws with this one?

yes I have looked under all 3 names - I wonder if there is an error with the transcribing Ive tried different spellings for surname as well

The 1881 is free to search on Familysearch or Ancestry. Have you looked already and cannot find him??
