Hi,

My Great Great Grandmother married twice. She married her first husband William Hulley in 1831(Rotherham) William died in 1848. She married her second husband Joseph Taylor in 1852 (Rotherham). I think I have managed to find all the census returns to from 1841 to her death in 1897.

The problem I have is there are children on the 1861 census Mary Ann Taylor born 1852 and Hannah Taylor born 1856. I am assuming that they are her children with Joseph. However, as I wasn't sure about the youngest I tried to establish who Josephs first wife was - I am struggling to find this wife, therefore I cannot find when she died. Also, on the 1871 census there is a Frederick Taylor born 1854. He wasn't on the 1861 census. There are other older children on the 1861 census, but I cannot find the family on the 1851 census.

There is something not quite adding up but I am not sure why.

Something's wrong, Sandra. The family that you posted for 1861 are already a family in 1851, Joseph & Harriet with children Thomas, Harriet, Charles and William.

Highly unlikely!
I would suggest that you start again at 1901 with the ancestor that you know definitely is yours and work backwards.

However, I still havn't managed to find them in 1851.

This census fits in with the 1871 census, particularly as Hulley was Harriets married name prior to her marriage to Joseph.

So it was as simple as having the wrong family in 1861. And that's the family I was working on.
Glad you're back on track!

Did you notice on the 61 census that the Hulleys were grandsons?
So Harriet had a 20 year old grandson and a 7 year old son!
Just thought it was interesting, imagine the 20 year old calling the 7 year old uncle!
Wait a minute, that can't be right, she couldn't have a 20 year old grandson when she was 47. Do you suppose it should say stepson?

Hi Margaret, it gets better or worse, than that. On the 1871 census it looks like Harriet and Joseph had a daughter Sophia born 1862!!

So that must be Harriet that Blossom found on the 51 census up at the top of the thread. Unfortunately it's mistranscrbed. Harriet isn't a sister, she's a nurse and she's a widow, age 37.

I have just looked at the family and I think that Thomas was her son,(not grandson) as there was a Son - Thomas born, according to my records, in 1841. Her first child was born 1832.
