Family legend says that Hugh should have inherited the title 'baron of Fowlis'. It's very complicated but the rumour has persisted for over 250 years so there must be something in it surely? The family names are: Hugh, Robert, Thomas, Nathaniel, John and those have been repeated down the generations so they must have come from somewhere.

If you have time I can explain:
The direct line came to an end in 1848 when Sir Hugh Munro of Obsdale Fowlis died without a male heir.
The entail set up by his father Sir Harry came into force then
The next family in line should have been the Munro's of Culcairn but no living male heir could be found (supposedly)
The Munro's of Culrain took the title - distant cousins.

My Uncle left a letter saying that he had seen a document with the family papers. It was from the War Office in 1747 describing a Munro who had been murdered when he was mistaken for someone else because he was riding a borrowed horse. You can read the story here:

This is what happened to Captain George Munro of Culcairn who was the first Munro of Culcairn. He would have been my Hugh's Grandfather if , as I think, Hugh,s father was John Munro of Culcairn and his mother was Catharine Ross. Culcairn is in Kiltearn and the marriage you found was in Kiltearn. ??

What did my Uncle ted see? Could it have been a notification about Hugh's Grandfather? If not why would it have been in the family? Uncle Ted had no idea who it was about or what it's significance was. He just sais it had been with Hugh's original ship's logs which my brother has and the family bible which has disappeared.

English marriage lines (pre 1837) don't show parents but Scottish ones might be different.

Thanks Steve - I think the Ross and Cromarty on eis the most likely as I think he came from the area around Fowlis Castle in Inverness. Do you know how I could get to see this record? WOuld it be in the Inverness library do you think? Thanks for your help - jennie

Hi Nicky - I've hunted through the IGI batch numbers for London and Middlesex in every parish that has marriage records for the period and cannot find the entry for Hugh Monro and Mary Kain. Do you have any suggestions? jennie

Given the date for the marriage it could well be a 'Fleet' marriage. I heard a lecure recently and the speaker said that for some reason the IGI have many 'Fleet' marriages recorded as Westminster even though they did not take place in Westminster!

That record is from the IGI, its a pity it dosn`t give which church for Westminster, to help you narrow it down, Westminster is a huge area with many parishes......... I have quite a few relatives who have married/born/lived in eirther the City or Westminster and seem to flip back and forward between the 2, which is why I picked up on that as a possibility. May be easier to track it through Mary,.....Kain is a more unusual name.

Where would you look for the parentage of this fellow?

HUGH MUNRO was born circa 1740, and died 15 Jan 1794 in St Botolph's Without Aldgate, London (Source: Corporation of Trinity House Petition from Elizabeth Munro - March 1794, also - burial records of St Botolphs.). He married ELIZABETH. She was born circa 1742, and died 04 Mar 1829 in St Botolph's without Aldgate, London (Source: burial records of St Botolphs.).

Notes for HUGH MUNRO:
Elizabeth applied for a pension from Trinities House in 1794 as Hugh had died. She said that he was a Captain with the Transport Services sailing out of the Thames at the time.
