Any idea what 'medd' means?

On the 1901 census my great-great-grandparents have an 8-year-old girl living with them. They share surnames and the relation of this girl to head of household is listed as 'medd grd child'. I'm pretty sure 'grd child' stands for 'grandchild', but does anyone know what 'medd' might mean? |

The girl in question doesn't come up if you search for her directly, but if you look for her grandfather (Wm Chattaway, b. 1847 Coventry), she appears on the same household record, along with her grandmother (Elizabeth Harriet) and a number of her aunts and uncles. Her name is Etty Chattaway, b. 1893 in Lancashire, Blackpool. |

Do you know who her parents were? No chance it's mother's name? (This is my way of saying I am stumped!!) |

I don't think it is the mother's name. I only say this because I tracked Etty Chattaway down on familysearch.org and her details were transcribed as this: |

A search for Etty Medd seems to bring up the same page. |

Interesting! I think you're right that it's just a case of records being transcribed incorrectly. A search for Elly Medd brought her up for me. I also searched marriage records, and a William Henry Chattaway (my great-grandfather) married an Ann Elizabeth Medd in 1893. I think I've found Etty's parents! |

Just a thought but instead of Medd could the 1901 census return have been transcribed incorrectly and it should read Head? This would describe her as Head's grandchild i.e. grandchild to the head of the household. |
