The old FS site will be shut down when they've finished transferring all the old stuff to the new site.
In the meantime, as each bit is done, you get redirected.
The censuses are available on the new site, although not in such a handy format. It's definitely rather a pain cutting and pasting the new format hits into your notes.

The 3 old 1880-1 censuses are available as databases at:

The US and ENG/WAL censuses are available for free at Ancestry, but no free images.
Some US censuses do have free images on FS, as do the 1831/1842 Lower Canada (=Quebec) censuses they put on in Feb 2012
(Like the pre-1850 US censuses, these only name the head of h/h, and counts of various age/sex classes in h/h)
There's a whole lot more than just the censuses at the above links, and not all image sets are fully indexed - many are just partial, and some unindexed.

Maureen, we get Pawn Stars on the History Channel out in BC.
They're just starting a new series - Cajun Pawn.

People seem fascinated by the idea that there's pots of money just lying around disguised as old junk.
Course, a good show needs more than that, but it's the real reason Antiques Roadshow is so popular.
History Channel also have a show American Pickers abt 2 guys who go round old barns buying junk.
Somewhere there's a show Canadian Pickers.
A&E have Storage Wars abt guys who buy abondoned storage locker contents at auction.
Discovery Channel (I think) have a show Meteorite Men, abt 2 guys who go round digging up meteorites - they can be worth more than their weight in gold (but $200 per oz is more typical).

The folks in the store don't assess the person, Mo. The lad bought this silver flask that he found in his grandfather's chest after he passed away. I think he got $200. Outside friends and experts come to the store when requested.

Because no one could authenticate the note written in the bottom (it is the cup to sip the whisky that detatches at the bottom) that was the amount. He was to guard something (payroll, perhaps, I do forget) and was authorised to shoot Union soldiers. What I have above is the only Confederate fellow I could find.

This is the show, and apparently the one I saw was broadcast in 2010.

Hey, Joy, how goes the battle?

Mo, last night I saw the TV series Pawn Stars from Las Vegas. A lad bought into the store and sold a silver flask belonging to civil war soldier David Alexander Shepherd, 1823 - 1883.

I was looking for some information about the soldier, purely out of interest. The flask was from England circa mid 1800s.

I thought the 1880 census would be the best as I don't know David's origin - even if he was born in USA or in England and possibly went there and fought in the civil war - as did my wife's GtGtUncle. (He was captured and released in 1865 and then married and had 11 or 12 children in Mississippi!)
