Hi Gang,

I had a great Grand father John Steele ,Born 1845 in Leslie, Fife, who was a Black Smith all his life. While I know that his father worked in a mill in Leslie Fife in the early 1840s as My Great grand father was born there and his brother James also. In looking for information on James (the brother ) and John the father I came across a psosible grand father to John and James. And he was a Black smith. I wonderedat that time if the smithing ran in the family. My other question is there list of Black Smiths in Scotland including the late 1700s and the early 1800s. Maybe a guild of Smiths or some other listings???

It's important to bear in mind that no proof of paternal parentage appears to have been found. (Unless I've missed it in the multitude of threads)

The 'info' about the 'father' is from a son's marriage cert, when both parents were said to be 'deceased'

On one of the threads, the mother's name is given as Isobella Douglas There is no marriage for a woman of that name (or variant thereof) to anyone named Steele on SP

Wasn't it only in 1855 that civil registration began in Scotland, so there would be no registered marriage to be found.

Feel free to contradict me if I'm wrong :-)

SP has 'old' Church registers - which is where I looked ;-)

HI all. I tried to connect William Moodie to Mrs. Moodie in Inverkeithing quite some time ago and could not find a connection. and there was a large time span between Mrs Moodie in her 40s in 1851 and William Moodie 18 years of age in 1871.

And yes Hector and James Green are John Steele's brother in laws.

And it was unfortunate that the wife Margaret Green died a few years later of TB, and her daughter dies early of lung complications in a sanatorium, and her oldes son died at 7 years of age of peritonitis, and her younges child died at just a few months of age .

But this does not get me closer to discovering who were the parents of John Steele the Black Smith who was born in 1845.
Again, thank you for your interest.

Cheers,

Jack Steele

William Moodie's census info is for 1881

His baptism shows his mother to be Elizabeth Moodie - no father named
