i went to hugh wallis's genealogical web sites clicked on england then on t for thorley put in name pope clicked on no. co2962fine, but what i cant make out is why mary & john pope had 3 sons called john maybe i'm missing somthing herecan anyone put me right please hazel. |

I've found a family had 4 Mary's I think its sad to name a child after a dead child it was a strange custom wasnt it ??? |

hi sam they have 3 other children there that i know about as well as one john that i know about but as you and pete say they could have died thanks hazel. |

I have quite a few instances of names being re-used after a child dies. I like to think that it was important in those day to honour your parents etc and that was done by giving your children their name. That and the importance of carrying on the family name, of course. Which is why so many children had a 2nd name usually that of the mother's maiden name. And of course there was that custom about how children were named and in which order. In a way - it all helps a little bit in our research. |

the only trouble is my lot did not follow tradition hardly any named after their mother or father that must be where I get it from I like to be different or as my husband says eccentric.. |
