I note that the chap he had summoned (William Brock) was also a painter....I guess the occupation of both of these men was the link that caused your chap to realise there was something amiss with the other man. Maybe they worked together or something? Merry |

I dont know of any connecting families. I was surprised to find his name in this article as later in life he was a painter and decorator, however on his marriage certificate in 1889 his occupation is down as Inspector . This is what makes me think that it must be him in Times. The guy that was accused of illtreating his daughter was a painter and decorator - how weird is that! |

strange that no james G Wright fits the bill on either 1901 or 1891 census. |

If he worked for an organisation like Dr Barnardos they may have staff records I suppose. Have you tried looking for this chap on the 1891 census in the area where this took place? It may not list his middle name but if he did this as a job rather than a volunteer then his occupation may help you to decide if you have him. Then you could look to see his age, wife's name etc. If you can't find him on the census then why not search the BMD indexes to see if there was more than one chap with that set of names. If you can only find one he's probably yours. |

interesting choice of year 1889........ 1889 The first act of parliament for the prevention of cruelty to children, commonly known as the 'children's charter' was passed. This enabled British law to intervene, for the first time, in relations between parents and children. Police could arrest anyone found ill-treating a child and obtain a warrant to enter a home if a child was thought to be in danger. The act also included guidelines on the employment of children and outlawed begging. 1894 The act was amended and extended. It allowed children to give evidence in court, mental cruelty was recognised and it became an offence to deny a sick child medical attention. |

I found an article in the Times digital archives about a James Garner Wright who in 1889 worked with the child protection service and had helped a young girl whose father had been beating her. How can I find out if he is my ancestor? I do not think that James Garner Wright is a common name. Is there a site that I can contact that would hold information about the people that worked for this society all those years ago? I hope that this is not to garbled!! Many Thanks in advance Karen |
