Yes thank you Gill this is how I managed to track him and his birth and marriage certificate down. He was living in Bristol at the time he was married and on his certificate it lists him as a second mate. When his children are born, their certificates list him as a 1st mate.

Thanks Gill - you do seem to know quite a bit! I haven't even thought that far ahead yet. Unfortunately no idea as to where he signed on. His daughter ( my grandma) was adopted after he died so the information was sparce. Trying to keep an open mind and look everywhere for him as we were originally told he was a Captain in the Army!!

So that leads me back to the ancestry site? If he isn't on War Graves he should be on there?

Hello Tixy, Yes he will be on the War Graves site if he died in service. I found my Grandfather on there and was able to visit the monument to the Merchant Navy at Tower Hill in London this Easter. Helenx

That would be great thanks - I just think it is rather odd that he hasn't died!! So should he be on the war graves site if he had dies in service?

I've tried under advance search and it was the record I found once before for a Clarence Mason born in Leeds and he definitely was born in Manchester!...and it would make him twelve at the time of the record!

I have tried everything I have learned so far ( not a lot!!) but cannot find a death entry for Clarence Mortimer Mason. The story goes that he died in the 1st World War but if he had would he have not been mentioned on the Commonwealth War Graves site? I have also looked on TNA but cannot search for individuals names. Surely he would be on either ancestry or War Graves site? Have I missed somewhere else to look? He was born 11th Sept 1885 in Gorton West/West Gorton - Manchester area. Got his birth and marriage certifcate (know that he was definitely in Merchant Navy) Please help?
