1911 census - from the horse's mouth

I have no scientific info on the subject, but 1901 seems to have more errors than earlier censuses. I suspect that this because more of the schedules were completed by the householders themselves and the enumerators were stumped by the handwriting. In those far off days when I wrote letters, they came back addressed to mythical people. Nobody can read my signature and I suspect that my ancestors were equally awkward. Let's hope that the 1911 census is searchable by address.

Yes, but the transcribers will be needed to index the names - that's where many errors occur. I think it very very very unlikely the 1911 census will be released early - the press release says they are only just looking for a company to help make it available online, and that successive governments have pledged that no census info will be released earlier than 100 years after the census was taken. nell

Since the schedules ('family sheets') are the original documents they will only contain errors ( and lies! ) that our ancestors made and no transcription errors. Bob

Oh, interesting Phoenix, thanks for posting that. Alter Ego, is the family sheet the actual form that's filled in by each household ? If that's the case we should be able to get a bit more information from the next census. Just wanted to add, there is a campaign to release the 1911 census early at this site: http://home(.)clara(.)net/denis(.)mccready/ Don't forget to remove the brackets

There are 2 parts -the bit the family fill in and the enumerators sheet- from what i know we are getting the family sheet not the format that we see in other censi.

I don't know how long this release has been lurking on the website. I found it by accident today: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/news/stories/110.htm
