It was a bit of a long shot actually... it probably IS James, and its the right family... in June 1851 James Mercer marries Esther Richardson, in Northfleet. His father's name on the marriage cert is James. They have 3 kids in Swanscombe. Esther dies in Swanscombe in Sept 1863 (she is described as wife of James Mercer & its the right age). There is a death just 12 months later for a James Mercer aged 36, described as son of William & Jane. I wondered if this is 'my' James, since I can't find him in 1871 & one of the children is living with an aunt Harriett & her husband (dont know where the other 2 kids are). I'm thinking it is the right James but the wrong details are in the parish burial records. |

Sometimes we have too much info!! It's very unusual for a grown man to have his parents mentioned in the burial register.......suppose the vicar thought he was being clever, but not if he remembered the name incorrectly! Merry |

Precisely! If I didn't know there was a good chance of finding this on the CityArk site I would probably have assumed that that the death registered in Sept 1864 was my James & left it at that! (Its not my direct line, Its the Richardsons I was after) So many of them died young, its so sad thinking of all these orphaned children. |
