I am looking at henry varney born 1805, i have tracked him in census 1841,51,61,71. Because there is no census for before 1841 i went onto familysearch*org to trace his birth for further hints... and i dont understand the return i got. The address is correct so i know i have the right family, but am i right in saying a 76 year old widowed man registered a baby boy in 1805? The formatting's always messed up like that in the first message on a thread. The details you've copied are the census return for the 1881 census. It shows that in 1881, Henry Varney, born 1805, was the head of the household. All the other people listed were living with him at the same address. The little boy was his grandson, and he was 8 months old in 1881.

Butter Fingers, No matter how nicely you type out your original message, it will come out looking as it did. The format cannot be changed. For a long message, most of us type 'see below' and type our question/request as a reply. Rebs x

It's still the familysearch.org site. When you go to the site and click on search, you should then click on International Genealogical Index in the left-hand margin to get pre-1837 births. You clicked on Census, which only gives you the 1881 census.
