I have a case with one ancestor (born pre 1837) who was entered in the parish registers under his mother's name only. However, when I got his marriage certificate it clearly stated his father's name. I found him living with his parents in 1841 under his mother's maiden name, along with (I presume) a gagle of brothers and sisters, all bearing the father's name. Weird.

I wonder if this is their marriage? Right place Wrong first name for the bride Maybe earlier than I might have expected? Well, I can't find a marriage Emily Williams to anyone called Perry anywhere in the country 1891-1897 :o(( Nor is there a death in the Herefordshire area for his full name (though the first names may not have been remembered correctly when Maud married). I also cannot find Emily Williams born in Canon Pyon on any earlier census (but of course, there are loads born in other places) The lack of a marriage is what surprises me.................. Can't wait for you to get another cert!! Merry

Maybe if her father was already dead when she was born, there was a mix-up at the registrars...........he should have been recorded as John Thomas Perry dec'd. Mind you, if he died more then 9 months before the birth, that might make a difference......... Merry

Thanks everyone On the marriage certificate for Maud Perry is states the father as John Thomas Perry. She was born 1900 so is on 1901 census with mother Emily as a widow aged 30 and brother John Thomas born 1896 and sister Emily Louise born 1897. Mothers maiden name was Williams and according to 1901 was born in Herefordshire as were all the children. I suppose the best thing to be would be to order one of the other childrens birth certificates and see if the father is on there. Linda

Hi Loopy, on one of my lines, the father's name is missing off both the birth and marriage certificate. On another line though the birth took place before civil registration, the marriage certificate didn't include the groom's father's name, but when we found an entry in the church register, it listed both his parents names. It may be worth your while checking with the church involved, or the record office covering the area will probably have a copy of the register which you could look at. Good luck with it anyway.

is her birth surname the same as her mothers surname? and is that the surnam of father on marriage cert?

Well, the most likely scenario is that, if the bride's surname has not changed from her birth name and the father she names is the same surname too, then she may have made up this person in order not to have to say she was illegitimate :o(( How long ago was she born? Would she be on the 1901 census? (I know you are going to say NO!!) If she was born post 1901 then your problem is not knowing the age of the mother :o(( merry
