Help/hints please On my mothers side I have got back to the late 1700s for maternal and paternal side. On my father side I have managed to get to early 1800s on the maternal side, but on the paternal side I can get no further than 1898. I have grandfather JOHN MAUDSLEY in the 1901 census, I have his marriage certificate, but I am unable to find him anywhere else prior to those dates. His marriage cert states his father as John Maudsley BUT, his stepfathers name was inserted first along with the stepfathers occupation of Baker. The vicar then crossed out stepfathers name and inserted John Maudsley, BUT left the occupation as Baker. I have no idea of granddads mothers name, only that he said he had a sister called Mary Ellen. I am unable to find any birth record as there are several John Maudsley`s around his birth date, which is December 1874, but I have reason to believe that granddad may have been telly porkies about his age. Any suggestions as to what I do now will be gratefully received. Kathlyn

Where does the 1901 census say he was born and what age does it give? What age is on the marriage cert and where did it take place?

Which area are you searching in Kathlyn? I am researching Maudsleys - mainly in Yorkshire :-)

Without a location, we can't try to look for him. Reg

Thanks for all your replies.... 1) On the 1901 census he has been recorded as born in West Ham, Plaistow, but that was where he was living at the time he was born in Bootle, Lancashire abt 1874 2) His marriage cert. gives his address as:- 72 Granville Rd. West Ham. He left Liverpool c1890 and went to sea, arriving back in the dock area of London where he met grandmother. Kathlyn

His age on the marriage cert is given as 24 which checks out with the 1874 birth date. Kathlyn
