Hi Linda Thanks for that info, so could have owned a horse........ makes him slightly above an Ag lab, so that is good, means the family has other means of support. Just found his father as an Ag lab....but seeing as they lived in Devon it is not too suprising. Thanks for the info Sue

Just a bit of additional info I recently found out that the reason that some of my farming line were Agric Lab then changed to carter was apparently they owned a horse, so assume pulled the plough, haycart etc. Also on non farming side, my great grandfather was a carter and it meant he owned cart and horse for hire in the towns and cities. If you look at the occupation 'Mason' a few lines down from him, you will see that the 's' is very different from that letter in the middle of Carter. And the 'r' at the end of 'lace maker' is just the same as the letter in the middle and at the end of Carter, so I say it is Carter. Some of my rellies switch from carter to ag lab from census to census, by the way. Kate.

It looks like caster to me:- Caster / Castorer Made small bottles for sprinkling salt, pepper, sugar etc. I guess it could also be Carter. Kath. x

My immediate guess before looking at the image is Carter, 'a person who drives a cart' but I will get back to you when I've looked at it. Kate.
