don't know if i'm missing something but i've been on bmd and as i don't know where my grandad was born how do i confirm which record is his? his surname was smith and so there are quite a few of them listed for his year of birth. is there anything that i could look at that would give info such as his date and month of birth or his fathers name.

If you know his birthday and his father's name you could use these as a checking point when ordering a likely birth certificate. At the GRO they will then refund part of your fee if the details don't match and if ordered from the superintendant registrar in the district where it was registered they may well check these details and not charge you at all if it's not the right entry.

Is this the two Edwards - coal miners?? I forgot to ask on your other thread who the witnesses were at the marriage? I remember Ed junr was born Jan 1884 or 1887 and it might have been Staffs, but have forgotten when he got married? Might be worth looking at the electoral roll for the address Edward gave when he got married on the offchance of something useful?? (desparate stuff req when looking for Smiths!) Merry

Yo ho!! Took me a while to work out the correct reg district, but I think it's Lichfield. The only birth reg is Q1 which is what you want, I seem to remember, even if the year is off!! Maybe you should order this and if the date is correct........(you knew his birthday date, didn't you?) Births Mar 1885 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Smith Edward Lichfield 6b 472 Merry

HI JANICE, EDWARD SMITH DIED 14TH DECEMBER 1964, 251 HIGH ST, CHASETOWN, BURNTWOOD STAFFS. MERRY, THANKS WILL SEE WHAT CAN DO WITH THAT. I KNOW HE HAD A BROTHER JOE BUT MAYBE HE DIDN'T LIVE THERE AT THAT TIME. WHERE DID YOU GET THAT INFO FROM? THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP, REALLY NICE OF YOU

He didn't exactly move around much then did he!? Married and died in the same place.....makes it seem even more likely he was born there too! Sorry, the census blurb was from 1901 and the birth reg was from FreeBMD. There are three or four Joseph Smiths registered in Lichfield in 1901-04 which might or might not belong to the same family....... Merry
