I seem to have been on this site about this lot so much. The more I find out, the less I know. Can anyone tell me the best way to go. Which certificates would I need to work this out? I want to find the entire family if possible. I'll put what I have so far. They are all in Essex. Eliza Ayley born Roxwell abt. 1818 married James Ketley born Good Easter abt 1818. They married in March 1840. Son William born 31st Oct 1852. Good Easter. Came to Australia 1874. I have the family on 1841 census as Shetley and 1851 census as Batley. Can't find 1861or 1871. The parents did not die until 1873 and 1878. I have one and maybe two daughters marriages 1869. What should I buy get the info I need. Would James and eliza's death certs. have their children's names? Thanks everyone.

The name of the informant would be on the death certs. but that could be anyone, not neccessarily the daughter. The info on a death cert. would be Name, address and age of deceased Date of death Cause of death Name and address of informant Date registered

Did James and Eliza die in England or Australia? I think Australian death certificates might have the children's names on, but English death certificates won't unless one of the children was the informant. Kath. x

Death certs can supply a lot or very little The only way they may help is if one of the children was the informant

Birth cert will give you; mothers name (and maiden name if married)hopefully it will have fathers name and occupation. Marriage cert should give you couples name and possibly ages (maybe recorded as 'full' meaning 21years+ or they might be telling fibs) Name and occupation of father (and possibly if he is deceased.). Death cert willl give place and cause of death, and as stated name of informant, who could be anyone,so the age (if recorded) may be way off the proper age. Glen

I'm in Australia but James and Eliza died in Chelmsford, Essex. They never left the place, just changed their names at every census. Yes, the Australian death certs have all the children, even dead ones listed. I was wondering if the English ones do as well. Obviously not. Is there any other official record that would have a list of a couples children? Apart from census. Thanks again.

It is well worth contacting the local family history society to see if they have a list of monumental inscriptions. These often give extra details such as children who died in infancy. If you can find the parish register it would have details of the earlier baptisms. Personally I use rootschat which is free to join. They have lists of local resources and links to local members willing to do look ups. It usually takes a bit longer than on here so be patient.
