Hello....can I suggest to go with your first plan and go to the Southwark record library in the Borough High Street, have a look at their web page, it will give a very good idea of what they hold, I think you will find quite a lot of what you are looking for.......have a lovely day.....and happy hunting.......Lilly |

If you are planning to visit Walworth, Camberwell and Peckham as well you are going to have a very hectic day. What streets? |

London Metropolitan Archives - a short walk from the Family Records Centre in Islington. Has parish records, electoral registers, school admission logs and lots more. Well worth a visit and would probably be more profitable than Borough Library (although this is a great place to visit if you know there's stuff there you want) Janice |

I suppose you could visit old addresses to see if the original buildings were still there. Local newspapers are generally archived on microfilm at the relevant main library/records office for the area. BUT going through them looking for articles, even when you know the date, will probably take quite a bit of time. nell |

Hello All, I have established that a great many of my ancesters lived and died in South London. I do not live there anymore. My niece and I are going to book a day off from work and travel there to have a day out, to see what we can discover about our family. Through this board I learned that the Borough Road Library would be a good place to visit. Does anyone have any more ideas where we can visit, or contact to make the day of real value? Also, some incidents in our family may have caught the attention of the local press (which would have been the broadsheet 'The South London Press' or the like. How could I research ancient copies to obtain info anf dates etc.? Thanks all in advance. XX |
