Trying to find info on Thomas Butterworth who married Henrietta Gordon Munro (born 1861 in Keith, Banffshire. They lived in Cupar until 1899 when they moved down to Newport, Mon. A newspaper article states that Thomas arrived in Cupar from ´The North´but I have no idea where and when he met Henrietta. Henrietta was still living with her parents in Keith in 1881. Can anyone help with 1891 Census returns please (for Cupar) as these might state more about his background. Thanks. |

If you go on Scotland's People to look at the Thomas Butterworth / Henrietta Munro marriage, it should give you details of both sets of parents. Kate. |

Is this them in 1901 (Wales)? I would have thought that Butterworth was a North of England name rather than North of Scotland, so my guess is the 'the North' meant North of England. Just looking at the image of the entry below, the surname is a bit of a scrawl but it could well say Butterworth, and it looks as though the enumerator got Thomas and Henrietta's details muddled up as the occupation for Thomas is blank, but for Henrietta it says, '1st Class Officer of Inland Revenue Estate (?) Outdoor Dept' and above in the box for Thomas's occupation there is what looks like a little arrow pointing down to the box below (Henrietta's) and 'Civil' written by a different hand, i.e. when the returns were being processed they counted that job as civil service. Then in the boxes for 'Employer/Worker/Own Account', again, Thomas's box is blank and Henrietta's says 'Worker'. So I believe this accounts for why Henrietta's birthplace is given as 'Witton, Cheshire' the same as Thomas's. If that is the right family in 1901, then if you search 1871 England (on ancestry) for Thomas Butterworth born Witton, Cheshire abt. 1862 you will find him with his family, and to check it is the right one just look at his marriage on Scotland's People and there should be enough information there to be sure. Kate. |
