John, can I just ask how you know Sarah's maiden name was Butcher? And is your William the one who is married to Eliza in 1871 (according to ancestry's transcription, I haven't got time to check the image just now) or is that a different William? Kate.

Right. Sorry but I have to get off the computer now, but if I have time later on I will see if I can find their marriage. Kate.

Get his marriage certificate, which will give you (a) his age when he got married (though it might just say 'full age' which means 21 or over, and of course he might have lied on that too!) and (b) his father's name and occupation. Then you can look for him on the 1851 census and, hopefully find William with the right father. His age should be accurate enough on the 1851 census for you to know whether he was born 1841 or 1845, as children's ages are (usually) more accurate than adults'. If you can't find him on the census then you could use the father's name from the marriage certificate as a checking point when ordering one of the birth certificates. Kate.
