Hi all, i've been trying to find a way of deleting living relatives from my Genes Reunited family tree here for a while, every time i've tried deleting living relatives from the uploaded gedcom here, an error message has shown up, and I had a moment of inspiration today, and thought i'd pass it on for anyone else who might have had the same problem. If you've uploaded your tree to World Connect at Rootsweb, you'll know that under the advanced option you can set a cut off date when you upload your Gedcom, I think it would be good if Genes Reunited had a similar option, but at the moment it doesn't, if any of the GR team are reading this, please think about users being able to set a cutoff date. Anyway, under the advanced options when you upload your tree, there are 3 options for users to download gedcoms, they can either download a full gedcom, a partial gedcom, where you can set a limit of the number of generations users are allowed to download, or you can set it so that users cannot download any part of the gedcom. If you set that option to 'full', then update your tree, when that has been done, just click on any individual's name in your tree at World Connect, click on the download gedcom option, then click on the thing that says download full gedcom. Once you've done that, you can go through the downloaded gedcom and add any living relatives you might want to add, and check through so that the tree makes sense from the cut off date (hope you see what I mean?) Don't forget, if you don't want users to have the option to download the full gedcom after you've downloaded it from World Connect to go back into the advanced upload/update screen again and check the other option you want. Once you've gone through the downloaded file in your family tree maker programme, you're then ready to upload it. I've just done this today, so hopefully it'll turn out ok. Anyway, hope this might help some other GR members, also, hope this all makes sense. All the best, and good luck to everyone in their searches. |

Another thing to remember is the necessity to hide living persons who have not given their permission. I usually select the hide living option when creating a Gedcom on PAF, but don't forget you then have to add YOUR personal details back or else GR can't recognise the Gedcom when you try to upload it. |

Yes, completely agree that you should ask permission from any living relatives about adding their details. In my family tree programme there is an option for privatising living relatives information, but there's no option to hide that information, I thought that privatising the information meant that none of those peoples names would even show up on here, but I was wrong, they did show up, but without any of the dates, or places attached, so obviously if searching by place or date, none of those names would even show up. But I still didn't want the names to even show up, and have been desperately trying to find a way of deleting them ever since. As I said, I think the way i've described of uploading a family tree is quite a good way of doing it. I set a cut off date of 1901, and just adjusted a couple of things when i'd downloaded the gedcom, before uploading to GR. It'll probably be a few more hours yet before the tree here is updated, but hopefully it'll go through alright. |

Yes, it does seem a bit complicated Valerie, I ended up with lots of Gedcoms at first and didn't know which one was which so ended up naming them 'file for worldconnect', 'downloaded file from worldconnect' and 'file for genes'. Hopefully it's helped a few people, and it seems to have done the trick with my lot. Best wishes John |

Hi Julia, the last time I updated my gedom, it showed me as my 2 times great grandmother for some reason. I think it might be that that was the person whose page I was on in my family tree programme when I converted the family file to a gedcom. I was going to try to upload the file again, but make sure i'm on my own page when I convert to Gedcom. Hope you can understand this, and that it might help you. I'll try it now, and will let you know what happens Best wishes |

Just a quick note to say that the first person showing up on my family tree is still my 2 times great grandmother, after the file's been processed, not too sure what's going on there. |
