Oopps sorry Merry! I meant far too respectable to be the Wicked Witch of the West! Lol Yes that does make sense Tom. She would have to have been a very strong lady to carry on with her six children alone. Lisa, I can't imagine the Queen Mum with a long cigarette holder either :o) Helenx

I've got a photo of my nan on her wedding day - she looks like the Queen Mum (same era, same style of wedding dress so maybe thats why!) I used to have a photo of her take a few uyears before her wedding (sadly lost this one), this one she was wearing her flapper outfit for, and holding a cigarette holder about a foot long - and didn't resemble the Queen Mum at all - wonder why?! I had one - Isabella McNally, who had 9 children, and then lost three of them and her husband before she was 40. I always imagined her as being a very 'strict' Victorian lady who wouldn't let the outside world see how she was feeling, then just before Christmas I found a phtograph of her (no idea what period though although probably c1915) and that is exactly how she looks - very private and as though she has had a hard life, but is disguising the fact - does that make sense? It's the only photo of her I have unfortunately.

The worst (when it shouldn't really be) is when you have had mental image for ages and ages and then someone finds a PHOTO!! My g-granny should look like the Wicked Witch of the West.....that is how I imagined her, like Elmira Gulch with her bicycle................ Then I get a photo and she is Mrs Bridges off Upstairs Downstairs!! LOL Merry

Mine is for Aaron Elworthy, my 3x Grt Grandfather, a butcher born 1806 in Somerset. I can see him standing on the street with his feet set slightly apart, his thumbs in his waistcoat pockets above a nice stout tummy, with ruddy cheeks, mutton chop whiskers and a kindly twinkle in his eye! Rosie Lusty Trollope certainly conjures up a picture.

Merry's discription of her 'Barefoot' ancestor has made me wonder how many of you have mental pictures of your long dead rellies that you've never seen and can you describe them?
