Can anyone please tell me if or how I can put only a surname into LDS without having to trail through pages of areas that don't apply. I only wanted Northumberland but you have to trail through thousands of Bedfords and other areas at the beginning of the alphabet...getting to westmorland is even worse. |

Hello Jean Once you select your country (british Isles) then (England) you should then be able to select county - surely they have Northumberland in? I shall have a quick look and report back! Snowdrop |

If you select IGI first (from list on left of screen)- you can then enter the county you require. |

Yes Jean it's there. Try this (to make sure you're on the right bit of IGI) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true Then select Region, Country, State - click and all the listings for Northumberland only will appear. Dont forget to select the ones you want to look at and download them from the first page BEFORE you move on to the next page. (otherwise you lose your whole search) Snowdrops |

It's worked greeeeeeat!!!!. I can't understand it, everytime I've tried before it kept asking for a first name as well. I've usually gone onto 'refine search' from the normal search, never mind it's worked and that's all that matters Thanks again |

If I remember rightly, you're not allowed to put a date in if you search against the surname only, which is a bit of a nuisance if you're searching for a common name. To get round that, you can enter the batch number, which you can find here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb*com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm (replace * with dot) |

Maybe that is what i'm thinking of Mary. I have tried quite a few times, just putting a surname in and I know I've had problems. It's great now not having to trail through pages but at the same time having to look at them incase the odd one is slipped in out of place, |

If you're looking for siblings, when you've found one child, enter his batch number, delete his Christian name, enter the names of both parents, and you'll get a list of all children born to parents of those names under the same batch number. That won't necessarily give you all siblings, though, because different churches have different batch numbers. |
