Thankyou everybody. I feel a right idiot!! I ordered the certificate and put his year of birth on there and not year of death. Sorry to have been a pain, Jackie.

Hi Phoenix, Thanks for the advice, I will go onto Ancestry now and give it a go. The image is typed. Jackie.

Go back to the freebmd site. Click the number, to see if there are other entries on the page. Click on the district to make sure that is valid. click on the spectacles, if they show up. Failing that, see if you can contact the transcriber or otherwise find out what page they were working from Is the Ancestry image for the quarter a printed rather than a handwritten page? A lot of us have suspected that there are several different versions of the GRO indexes. The oldest extant ones are the microfiche copies in libraries. As the GRO retyped volumes, errors crept in to the later indexes. Nobody appears to know when the various online indexes were scanned in, but people have certainly found differences between 1837online and Ancestry. NB If the GRO have sent you a certificate that you didn't ask for, I should have thought that you ought to get some money back.

So the info on FreeBMD is incorrect?? You can check the image on 1837 online (or ask for a look up if you do not have credits) Ring the GRO and see what they say, if it's FreeBMD's error then there's not a lot you can do regarding your wrong cert

I had the year, Quater and Reg district from FreeBMD. But it does not exist according to the GRO. Jackie.

I checked the image on Ancestry and it wasn't there(it is only on the FreeBMD) Jackie.

If you ordered online from the GRO you would have had a year and quarter and registration district, wouldn't you? Heather

I found the record of my g.g.grandfather's death on the FreeBMD death index. All the details tied in exactly with what I had been told by family and also the censuses, so ordered it. The certificate arrived this morning but the GRO had changed the details and the certificate was for someone with the same name who died the following year in a different area. Needless to say that it was the wrong certificate. I re-checked the details on the FreeBMD and I had all the details right. I then checked on the complete images and wasn't there! What can I do? I am certain that the FreeBMD entry was correct. Thankyou for taking the time to read this, Jackie.
