After living with her mother for years I find Jane Bonnett in this census return for 1881: >> 1881 CENSUS: 1 Crackpot Lane Spalding, Lincoln, England Richmond Exton Head Male 48 Eagle, Lincoln, Police Constable. Jane Bonnett unmarried Female 43 Sheffield, York, England Housekeeper. >> They didn't marry because they were not together on the 1891 census but am I just an old romantic? Does this have a whiff of Mills and Boon? Or was she genuinely a housekeeper?

I think you would need a bit more evidence than that...! I don't suppose she had any children, did she? Actually, if she didn't then it suggests she wasn't getting any as there wasn't much contraception in those days! By the way, 'they didn't marry because they weren't together on the next census' doesn't necessarily follow, at least not if they were anything like some of my ancestors! Kate.

So why did you say they weren't together on the 1891 census? I am confused! Kate.

I was fortunate that in the 1871 census it was noted that they were lovers i.e. John Jacob Unmarried Head, Sarah White Unmarried Concubine. Lin

Kate, I'd been looking for an Exton, not an Eaton, and I thought I'd found Richard lodging on his own. Now I see that was a completely different person. This is a perfect example of the power of GR.... mutual assistance!
