When you say it is not on ancestry, do you mean their 'beta' index, or their copy of the FreeBMD database? Have you tried different spellings of his surname? Have you tried Lancashire BMD? Not sure if they have many deaths loaded yet, though. Anyway, if you know when he died you should be able to order the death cert without the reference number. It will cost £11 instead of £7 if you order from the GRO, I think, and I'm not sure about if you order from whichever local register office it is in Lancashire. For most local register offices the date and place of death would be enough, but Lancashire have their own system... Kate.

Have you checked the FULL records on Ancestry? Not just the freebmd transcripts.................. Reg

Do you mean you looked it up on the GRO indexes at the library, but didn't write down the ref and now can't find it, or that you looked it up somewhere else and now cannot find it on the GRO index?? When you say you looked on Ancestry, do you mean on the beta GRO indexes? Merry

i never had a gro ref, the only ref number i have is off the film at the records office and it doesnt look like a gro ref number it was 38094 page 1161 lancashire bmd have not transcribed all the deaths yet and i only looked on ancestry beta deaths and free bmd. i have tried other spellings i will have to apply for it without a ref and see what happens thanks love linda x

Hi Lindy i too have checked Ancestry Beta for you even Jan-March 1916 incase he was registered later on and various spelling of O'Neill. Hes not there, maybe it was the circumstances of his death if there was an inquest etc. Theres not even an O'neill of the same age at death with a different forename. I have been looking myself for a death 1893-1901 as i know for sure this lady died her husband was a widow in 1901 and a widow on his 2nd marriage cert 1903 i carnt for the life of me find this lady.. Right, understand now! Hmmm......I agree that there doesn't seem to be a GRO ref.....I have tried without the ''O'' as some of my ''O'Mahoney'' rellies turn up under M on some GRO indexes! I would apply through the local Reg Office if I were you. As you have his date of death that should make things easier for them. The only problem would be if he died outside of their area, but was buried at Leigh. Is this very likely?? Merry
