I am trying to trace my husbands side of the family. His grandfather was Robert Grant born 31/03/1890 in Consett co Durham - Lanchester Dist.. I have a copy of his birth certificate and his parents were Peter Grant and Elizabeth, formerly Harper. I have looked at a copy of the 1891 census and can see these parents and 4 children Thomas 1869, Henry 1873, Peter 1876 and Edward 1885 but no mention of Robert who should surely have been on this census. When it comes to the 1901 census I cannot find any of them but I can see a Robert age 11 in the Lanchester workhouse who was born in Consett who I take to be my Robert . I have trawled all the deaths from 1890 to 1901 to see if I could find that his parents had died but again no luck. HELP, WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE ??? |

How sure are you that Peter and Elizabeth on the birth cert are the same couple as on 1891 census? Does Peter's occupation match up? Is the address the same? nell |

The 1891 census image shows 1 William Street Peter, a labourer in an iron works, aged 50, Elizabeth his wife aged 42, a laundress, Thomas, son, aged 22, a puddler in an ironworks. The next page shows Mary, daughter in law, aged 23 Henry, son, 18 a coal miner Peter, son, 15 a coal miner and Edward, son, 6 a scholar There is a BIG age gap between Peter and Edward. It's possible that Edward is the son of Mary and Thomas, and therefore Peter senior and Elizabeth's grandson. nell |

Thanks for all your suggestions they will give me something to look into tomorrow. Helen Little Nell has the correct Robert Grant as it states on the birth certificate that he was born at 1 William Street Consett Conside and Knitsley.and the 1891 census shows his father Peter as being 50 and wife Elizabeth age 42. If as someone says Elizabeth died in the 1890,s I still cannot trace what happened to Peter but I have something to go at. Any other suggestions gratefully accepted Regards Wendy. |
