Genealogy Chat

I know this is very specific but... we are helping my Aunt trace her family tree (she has a different father to my Mum). Anyway we have found the Pesane family in the 1881 census living in South Colingham, Notts. Now the father is living in Newark transcribed as Peasino and in the 1871 census it is Persanei. On free bmd the birth record of Angelina is Pesani. Which one is correct. Many Thanks for any hints/ideas.

I'd go with the birth record, as that's the name which you follow throughout life

Pesani looks the most authentic to me, but they could all be wrong! have you tried googling to see if you can find other folk with this surname? I'd imagine the bmd entry would be the most accurate - the registrar would be given the info by someone who knew the name, whereas an enumerator might just write down what it sounded like. nell

Tricky. I know that in the GRO index there is Ladd instead of Sadd.......... so,,,,, erm, tricky one this :-)

The image of 1881 - the last letter has no loop - but has no dot either. So even 1881, it could be Pesani. The census spelling is down to transcribers, enumerators etc getting it right - rather than the actual family. Christine

At least you know its 'Pe~' which is better than having the initial letter wrong!

Thanks. I googled and it seems to be a place near Bosnia!!! It is so difficult finding 'English' names let alone the 'foreigners' that pop over. At least we know he was born in Tuscany which is a real bonus as usually you only get the country. You have to wonder why an Italian would come to Newark. Poor thing. Pippa who is full of foreign sailor blood.

I'd say the 1871 spelling is down to the enumerator guessing how to spell it when he was told the name. Christine
