Last few days been contacted by a rellie and I can confirm by looking at his tree we are connected. His great grandfather's brother married my great Aunt, so what are we to each other? I'm so excited. Been on here over 3 years and first possible connection, so just goes to show you guys, your work pays off in the end. catherine xxxxxxx

I think you are 1st cousins, once removed. Or maybe 2nd cousins by marriage, once removed. His great great uncle married your great aunt and you have to find a common ancestor and work down from them. As you are a generation apart you are 'once removed' from each other. My brain won't work tonight - nothing unusual there! Look at this chart here. (Remove the brackets) http://genealogy.about(.)com/library/nrelationshipchart.htm Hope you can understand my ramblings! As there is no blood tie I don't think you are related. Penny

My grandmothers sister married his great grandad's brother. This therefore make my grandmother's sister my great aunt. god my brain is getting frazzled! catherine x

So you are not related to each other (except by marriage), but you will both be related to the children and other descendants of the couple you mention. Merry

just looked at it again- you arent directly. the children of this married couple will be 1st cousins twice removed to him but 1st cousins once removed to you the grandchildren of this married couple will be 2nd cousins once removed to him,but second cousins to you.
