Hello All, Please could someone help me with an 1881 census search, I think I am going mad trying to find Joshua Hosslen c1863 Bow, London! I am trying to trace my Grandmothers family on my Dad’s side. Their name is Hosslen and they are the only Hosslen’s in England so you’d think it would be fairly straight forward, but I seem to be stuck! The info I have found so far is: 1861 census All under the name HOSSLER Joshua (head) Elizabeth (wife) Ellen Mary Ann RG9/295 mile end old town 12, 13, p20 1871c – All under HOSSLEN Elizabeth (wife) Alexander Harriet E Joshua (Head) Joshua (son) 1881 census Alexander Hosslen in 45regt Sherwood Forsts (private) age 14! Under different address Ellen Hosslen (servant) 1891 census – All under the name HORSBEN Joshua Emma Alexander James George Alfred RG12/10 Paddington 35, 101 p24 1901 census – All under HOSSLEN except Emma, she’s called HOOSLEN Alia Emma (wife) George James Joshua (Head) Under different address Alexander Hosslen (head) Charlotte Hosslen (wife) Elizabeth Snell (visitor) But I cannot find Joshua Hosslen, (or Harriet Elizabeth Hosslen) on the 1881 census (or Harriet on the 1891 census). Their parents (Joshua and Elizabeth) had died before the 1881 census, so I expect them to have split up as his other sibling had. Harriet did not get married until 1896 and Joshua until sep-dec 1881. Any help / advice / tips would be most gratefully received as I think I may be going barmy!

Hmm, thanks for that Jess. If that's him then Eliza Hopkins must be his aunt, but the only Eliza / Elizabeth Hosslen I have found is his mother. He seems to change job with every census, so no clue there I'm afraid.

how do you know where and when he married ( and who even)? THERE SEEMS NOT TO BE ONE jOSHUA MARRIED IN KENSINGTON, THE QTR 1881 THAT YOU SAY

Hi Jess, The marrage is 1881 Kensington Jul - Sep 1a 322 not sep - dec! (helps if you know when Sep comes in the calender - DOH - sorry)

Oh and it is probably Emma Tubbs, but I am waiting on the marrage cert to confirm her name.
