Missing family from 1871 and 1881 census

Not sure if anyone has come across this before but I am researching my husband's family (Sewell) and I have them on the 1901 and 1891 census but can find no trace of them on the previous two census's. They lived in Norfolk area although judging by where the children were born they travelled around a bit (incl Suffolk and Cambridge). I have searched Ancestry.co.uk for both father/mother and all the siblings with no luck. Is it possible that some census info is missing, or that they managed to avoid two census's? This seems unlikely to me. I think I have managed to find the previous generation on the 1851 census but it's really bugging me as to where they could have been for the other ones. Any ideas gratefully received. Sarah Sewell

It would be worth looking for Lewell or even Lowell. (Ls are often transcribed as Ss and vice versa)

It looks as if George is correctly transcribed in 1861, but with a slightly different birthplace.

Sarah, My Sewells came from Cambridgeshire, my Gt.Grandmother married a Saywell from the same town. I've found during my research that some records show the names the wrong way round. So perhaps you should try looking for various forms of your surname. As has already been mentioned the S is often shown as L. You might find The Sole Society web site of interest. M. Steer.
