It never ceases to amaze me some of the things i find, note down for later use then can't find when i need them. Then you suddenly find all five instances of the birth ref or census numbers in the last place you thought they would be. However you organise it never seems quite right, but then again i am one of them bloke things.(And yes i find socks are best found on the bedroom floor) Glen |

Thanks for your advice Glen (thats what FTM stands for!!) It's strange as in the last couple of weeks it seems that I've had about 3 hot matches that seem really HOT !!! And it's thrown me a bit as I was very much pottering away on my own and now there are lots of questions coming my way !!!! Its made me realise that : a. I need to arrange my info in a more organised way (ie the software) b. Cite source of info in more detail as what my Nan may have told me last January may now have been superceded by my research !! It's all good fun though!! Best wishes Ren |

Hi Renee As you have probably guessed, tree links can be an absolute minefield. Some people will readily share information others won't. The best advice is to confirm the link between the trees before you approach the subject of tree views, but be prepared for some people not knowing very much. If you link to a person who will share information then all well and good, but it can sometimes seem like a one way street, but above all do not use the GR automated tree request, most people will happily ignore those till the cows come home. Hi You are quite right to want to store information away from GR. Most people would recommend a programme such as Family Tree Maker (FTM) There are a few versions, cost from around £20 upwards, depending on whether you buy on-line or from a retail shop. You can enter photographs, notes, dates etc,in fact every little snippet you find can be entered if you wish, and you can print reports for just one person in the tree or for each individual if you wish. That way you can share your family history with people who do not have access to a computer,or you can just reveal relevant information to someone who is linked into your tree,as oppossed to the GR tree view idea (all or nothing). For an outlay of under £30 the things you can do with FTM are pretty well unbeatable. Glen |

Hi Renee If you do a search in the little box for Software, you'll find lots of threads about it. Heather |

If you put a search in the box at the top of the page for family tree software or something similar you will get up dozens of threads on this! General consensus seems to be for Familytreemaker 2006. |
