This is a really long shot and only something to keep at the back of your mind, but.................. In 1901 there is Isabella Duncan, ''niece'', living with the Hartley family. If you look at her in 1891, her parents are Henry and Eleanor Duncan. Eleanor Duncan has the same place and year of birth (almost) that Eleanor Hartley, wife of George, does in 1901. I looked for Henry Duncan (Isabella's father) in 1901 and he is shown as married with one of the younger children in tow, but no wife. Do you have a scandal??? Probably not - may just be a co-incidence, but.............................. Merry

Merry, you are one smart person. Henry Duncan did infact marry Eleanor on 4th Feb 1882 and hada number of children including Isabella who is shown in the 1901 census. You are correct in saying that poor old Henry and a younger son where kicked out for reasons unknown and lover boy George Hartley moved in having two children Eleanor & Florrence. I can find no record of any divorce or remarriage between George or Eleanor. Henry died in 1909 in a workhouse in Throston. Just to keep the story going Florence went on to have 3 children out of wedlock to 2 different fathers (unknown) the became a' pillar' of the local church. It's just so difficult trying to find details about George. Matt

No George Hartley listed on 1881 census but at 29 Skinner Street, Stockton on Tees is Ann Hartley, 51. Widow, born Glamorgan, son Ellis Wm, 18, daughter Marian Lawrence, 27, son-in-law Harry Lawrence, 23, unemployed sea going engineer. Maybe George was at sea at that time.
