I've got my nan and grandads original marriage cert 1920 It's the first original one I have seen from this era. I know I'm probably going to sound thick but it has a penny postage stamp stuck on it. was this the norm? thanks Linda |

Yes it was. We have my mother-in-law's original birth certificate (which is rather tatty) from 1909, and that has a stamp on it. Can't remember if it's a penny one or not without finding it to look. Kath. x |

I THINK (awaiting correction??!) the value of the stamp is the tax element of the payment for the certificate. So, you paid for the cert.....most of the money went to the reg office and the last bit paid for the stamp (tax) Merry |

Merry is right. I am not sure about when 'stamp tax' was introduced or abolished, but husband and I both have birth and marriage certs of our ancestors with stamps on. Didn't you have to pay stamp duty/tax when you bought a house? nell |

Found by googling: 'In 1765 a Stamp Tax was enacted. It imposed taxes on all legal documents (i.e. marriage licenses, newspapers, and 47 other documents). ' This is one of the complaints the colonies in America had, which led to the American War of Independence. nell |

From Wikipedia 'Stamp duty is a form of tax that is levied on documents. Typically, a physical stamp (A tax stamp) must be attached to or impressed upon the document to denote that stamp duty has been paid before the document becomes legally effective.' More than you could possibly want to know here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_duty_land_tax#History_of_UK_stamp_duties |

When I first started work (1964) there was a duty stamp on cheques. |
