age at marriage (confused)

john w abraham b 1863 marchwood hampshire marries mary ellen ? b1865 but the only marriage i can find is in 1874 south stoneham hampshire could this be right that would make her 9 or 10 yrs old!!!!! can anyone help?

It can't be the right marriage then, or their dates of birth are wrong. Girls could marry at 12 and boys at 14 (with parental consent), but marriage at this very young age very rarely happened. Have you found them together in a census. If so which is the earliest census they are together? Kath. x

thanks kath but not sure where to look next i know they had a son herbert in 1891 so i asumed they would have married maybe a couple of yrs before.

Were they both from Hampshire? There is this marriage but it's in Gloucestershire:- John William T.S. Abraham June qtr. 1891, Barton R., 6a, 980 (page number is not clear) Can't check spouse name as it's on Ancestry's Beta index. Kath. x
