Don't forget that 1837 online (and Family Relatives too) also have the 1984 onwards database. Also, it is much quicker to search for a birth, marriage or death post-1984 because all the sites have it on a fully-indexed database (because that is how the GRO supply it to them), so you don't have to plough through quarter by quarter. But for just one lookup I would say 1837 online, though I'm not certain if you can search that period for free on ancestry, but I think you have to subscribe?

Thanks everyone, I will take the plunge with Ancestry then, at least for the period its free to seach. I think this might be a no hoper though but will carry on looking anyhow..... Sam

Ann, the problems with ancestry sit is that as they have added more records they have moved everything around making some records/links harder to find. Roy

Ann, If you scroll down under the beta index, you will find the index for 1984-2000 Sue.

Samantha, Ann, Ancestry births/marriages go up to 2000 deaths go up to 2002, If you can only subscribe to one site then ancestry is the one with the most census/bmd and much more records Roy

Have checked on Ancestry in case she died earlier, and also on 1837 and can't find anything at all. On the census forms she could have used a short form of her name and with a surname like Jones, I think you would have more luck finding a needle in a haystack unless you have something else to go off - who else she lived with or some such. Sorry I can't help.

Thanks guys. We only have the information on my father's birth certificate about this lady plus a few family rumours to go on. She did live in 1930s in Lewisham, SE London but rumour has it went on to live in Exeter. We do not have a date of birth nor death. Sorry but with a name like Jones thrown into the equation this does not make for very easy searching. Sam

I thought ancestry was free to search for all at the moment. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'm trying to trace a death post 1984. Only have enough funds to join one site. Does anyone have any thoughts on which of the two provides best value for money? Most people on here seem to like Ancestry but BMD is a little cheaper. Alternatively could I be cheeky and ask if someone has access to the above index could they do just one look up for me....Elizabeth Arlette Jones, date of death. Thanks Sam
