I have taken a chance on a death cert for a William Green.......Unfortunately it doesn't give me any info that will help me decide if it's definately him........Last info I have is 1901 census which looks like he's living in Jupp's Road, Stepney............The cert for 1914 has the death in Whitechapel Union Workhouse South Grove......In the occupation part there is an address 11 Duval Street Whitechapel.......As there is nothing to tie this up can anybody with more knowledge of this area give me any idea of the distance involved......I have an old ordanance survey map but the streets are so small it's made my head spin trying to read it even with a magnifying glass!!!!....Any help please.......Diane

Go to http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ and insert Whitechapel in the Search box.

I know the area a little but not these roads in particular but suggest that the distance between any point in Stepney to another in Whitechapel cannot be too far BUT depends on the name you are researching, numbers could be large within a confined area and even same names would be possible. I haven't looked but have you tried http://www.old-maps.*co.*uk/ but without the asterisks. You will get OS map but you are able to enlarge.

Thanks Joe, will have a go at that too. Being the name is William Green it is a total pain, but this death is the only one that came up with similar info to what I have. I think it definately warrents a bit of digging to check if only to rule it out. Thanks for the input. Diane

Pity cant get anything from mod map - Nearest Jupp St is W. Ham and no Duval in London. You just have to see it as being part of the 'fun' !! ha ha

This one has been anything but fun from start to 'finish' Almost every census a different age/job/birthplace. 2 marriages, married the 17 year old servant he had on 1871 in 1872. Haven't yet found his 1st wifes death or a few of the children he had in 1871. But as you say thats the fun of it!!! Diane
