Kate Rimmer was a star and did an 1851 look up for me at the archive centre and found the parents of my Thomas Foster born c.1846 in Woodborough, Notts. His parents are Elizabeth Marshall born in Stragglethorpe and William Foster born c. 1820 in Keyworth or Stanton on the wolds. I cannot get any futher back with either parents but thought I would try the Foster branch but without success. I cannot find any Fosters born in Keyworth let alone anything else. I thought that I would check the IGI and found these entries and thought they might help. HARRIOT FOSTER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 05 FEB 1826 Keyworth, Nottingham, England 50. ELIZABETH FOSTER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 11 MAY 1823 Keyworth, Nottingham, England 51. ANN FOSTER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 15 JUL 1817 Keyworth, Nottingham, England 52. WILLIAM FOSTER - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 07 FEB 1820 Keyworth, Nottingham, England I cannot find any of these people in the census to find my William's parents. The parents of all these children are Cathereine and Joseph Foster. The only marriage I can find between William Foster and Elizabeth Marshall by cross-referencing the GRO is in Alfreton in 1844 and gives William's father as Joseph Foster. Many Thanks!

I'm not really understanding what you're wanting to find out, you seem to have answered your own question :-) Thomas Foster's parents are Elizabeth Marshall and William Foster. It looks like you've found their marriage and presumably got the certificate if you know that Joseph is William's father? The entries on the IGI have a William born at the right time and place, with a father called Joseph? You could try looking for Joseph Foster and wife Catherine on the 1851 census (if they're still alive), it would give you a place of birth and an idea of where to search the parish registers. Emma

Sorry that is what I cannot find! For love or money I cannot find Catherine and Joseph on the 1841 or further census returns. I thought that if I could find the other children of Joseph and Catherine then I might be able to find them but I can't find any of the other children on the IGI. Can you?

If you can't find Joseph or Catherine or any of the census to get an idea of where they were they were born, the only thing I can suggest is that you start by looking at the Keyworth parish records as that is where their children all seem to have been born. Don't think there's really anything else you can do. Emma

Hiya Pippa, It just so happens that I am planning a visit to the Notts Archives again soon, and your lookups look much easier than 'can you find so-and-so's two wives, he was born such-and-such a year but I don't know anything else' or 'can you find where and when so-and-so died?' so I will have a look through Keyworth for those Fosters. It could be that some of them died before 1841, and the burial register should tell us that. Also, the archives have a surname index to the 1841 (by piece) done by the Nottinghamshire Family History Society, so I can easily find out if there were any Fosters in Keyworth in 1841. Kate.

Sorry not explaining myself very clearly. The 1851 entry that Jess found is the one that Kate found that led me to Thomas' parents. Other than that I cannot find in the 1851 census Catherine and Joseph or the other children. I cannot find the right family for William, Joseph and Catherine in the 1841 census either.
