Thanks to Genes I have linked up with someone who has the same ancestors.Only problem is we are now BOTH stumped! So if there is anyone out there who can suggest anything to move this tale along I will send you a big hug by email!! The story so far....... Derek and I are related. My great great great grandfather a george haines born on 27th jan 1827 bap 25th feb 1827 in Chelsham surrey is sister to his Mary ann. We have checked ALL the Census available to double check our George and Mary and all the info seems correct(george does say on some census born in Titsey surrey, this is 4.1 miles from Chelsham so we are happy to go with the Chelsham b & b) Their parents are listed as An An Osborne and Edmund Haines. This info is on the mormon site and Derek has confirmed it by visiting surrey records office. So far so good but now for the hard part..... We have followed Edmund and Ann through the different census's as well. The edmund and ann that tie up with us consistantly say in the different census that they were born - Ann Osborn Wroughton Wiltshire Edmund Haines Bishopston or Bishopstone in Wiltshire. We have checked every website we can think of but they dont appear there at all! I have even paid a researcher to search the parish records for wilt ,but without sucess. we have checked both Bishopstones in Wiltshire but edmund is not listed. There are variations on Anns name ie Ogborn but no Edmunds. I hope to go to the sog library in London to check the fische for a BishopSTROW in wiltshire as this might shed some light. Does anyone out there have any suggestions.. I think our Edmund and ann must have been taken by aliens>... Regards Karen |

Have you looked at Rootschat recourses for Wiltshire. I see Wiltshire BMD is on line. It might be worth looking for Haines to see where the families were living. I have Haine as a surname from Somerset and have also seen Haynes like the car manuals. |

Hi karen here I will try roots chat thank you georgina as for twins it is possible.Ann and Edmond were in Kent until at least 1851,and 3 of their other children were listed as being born in westerham. We dont have any record of it but it seems there is a good chance the twins could be theirs |

Hi there, A really really long shot, but maybe Edmund wasn't born in Wiltshire after all? I've heard that some people weren't actually sure where they were born, so they put down where they had the earliest memory of living, or where they grew up. You've probably seen this, but on the IGI an Edmund Haines was born in 1800 in Chelsfield. This entry was submitted by a member of the LDS church, so is open to mistranscription. I would check the register for Chelsham to check it's not him. Other than that sorry but I haven't a clue!! Good luck, Karen |

A few ideas: Have you already looked at the parish records entry for their marriage? And are there any clues on there? Presumably you have one of the children's birth certificates to check that Ann's maiden name was Osborne and that it wasn't her previous married name? Don't forget that sometimes people knocked a few years off their ages on the census, so it could be that they were older than they said. I don't know much about Wiltshire so I don't know if there were many non-conformists around there, but if they were non-conformists it might be hard to find their births / baptisms. Oh, and my partner has a few Edmunds in his tree who used the names Edward and Edmund interchangeably, so maybe he was christened Edward? Kate. |
