Does anyone have any experience of the City of London Cemetry? Some family deaths I have full details of, however, others just the info from the death registries i.e. area, year quarter etc. Is this enough information for me to go looking with?

I was lucky as the cemtries I needed to visit for family up to 1800 are in my local parish..... & even luckier as my mum is the local clerk & has the burial in her office at home!! Unfortunatly the records she has only goes back to just before 1890 which was when the church handed over the cems to the council. On a trip to the cem we managed to find with the help of the grave numbers & map managed to find 2 family graves one which included a memorial too 2 brothers who died on the Titanic...... I do count myslef as very lucky!!

The people at the Camberwell New Cemetery in South London were extremely helpful when I went there to search through all their huge (and very dusty) old volumes of burial records, trying to find out where and when a certain ancestor was buried. After a couple of hours searching I finally found him listed and was literally jumping for joy - until I discovered he'd been buried in a common grave so no headstone to see, just a plot number. But - while there I asked them about someone else - my grt grandfather's grave - gave the year he died etc and the chap there looked it all up for me. Then he gave me a map of the cemetary and marked down exactly where the grave was and then someone walked with us half the way to make sure we didn't get lost! Wasn't that nice! And when we got there we discovered my grt gran was buried in the same grave!

Linda, Even dafter......I've asked for money for my birthday so that i can get some headstones for them, just so they are remembered. I found that a great aunt had a paupers funeral and that was in 1980, how sad? Also found babies that I didn't know about with my g.g.grandfather, cried my eyes out!

isn't it nice that people are prepared to go out of their way to help? I know I am going to get emotional, I'm a sniveller anyway, I have 3 to see my Nan (mothers side) she died before me and my sisters were born, my nans sister (dads side) and the one I really want to see is Thomas and Sarah my great grandparents buried together. This couple have become very special to me (do I sound like a nutter?) I have copies of that poem put on here a couple of weeks ago about ancestor so want to put that with flowers I'm getting emotional just thinking about it! I best make sure I take tissuses. Linda x I know I probably sound like a nutter already so I may aswell tell you this story.A childhood friend of mine died a couple of years ago.I went to the funeral and a couple of months later I decided to go back to the crem to see if she had a plaque so I could take flowers, I didn't want to ask the family incase I upset them (she was only 34) so I went to the crem (which is huge) stood at the gate and said to myself 'how on earth will I find you Julie?' I don't know what happend but found myself drawn to one path which I followed and sure enough there was her plaque in quite a secluded place.

Hi Linda, I just visited a graveyard with the plot numbers and the groundsman there took me to each of them. He asked of i needed to find anymore, i told him that i did but in a different cemetery. He gave me his phone number to ring him when i got there, met me and found the plots. Unfortunately, only one of mine had a headstone!! Also, said to phone him when i visit again and he will look for any others that i find. Cant believe how helpful they were.

I know several of my ancestors are buried in the same cemetery, unfortunately it's HUGE and even with plot numbers I doubt I would ever find them.So today I emailed the local crem who are in charge of the cemetery and asked how I would go about finding the graves.Got a reply within a couple of hours reading As you have the plot number, if you go to the Cemetery between 8.00am - 4.00pm Monday - Friday a groundsman will be able to take you directly to the grave. As the Cemetery is so big, have trouble finding a groundsman please call (their number)and we can arrange for someone to meet you I was so chuffed, so if anyone is put off by trawling a cemetery email them first Linda
