Where and when was he born please? Registration in England and Wales did not commence until midway through 1837, and then it was not compulsory until 1875. If you give us some details, we may be able to help you. Liz

The fact that he was illegitimate is irrelevant. His birth should still have been registered as normal. Give us some details we can work on .ie his name approx years of birth and area he might have been born in

Gill, I could not find my 2-g-grandmother's birth reg, despit ehaving her date and place of birth from a family bible. It was simply not listed in the GRO index at all. I wrote to Wigan register office (she was born in Wigan) giving as much info as I knew, and they located the cert and sent it to me within a couple of days. Fortunately this is rare, but a handful of births ( and presumably marriages and deaths) are missing from the index, despite being registered. Liz

Is there any way his surname could have been really misread. I ask because my own marriage record is mis-labelled because my father (who was the Rector, and took the service, so filled out the Register) had quite a flamboyant script and so my name was under BOU... instead of BEN...! When I looked at their copy of the cert, I could see why. Christine

Where do the censuses say he was born? Liz

Ok, I have looked at the censuses. 1891 has been mistranscribed as 'Kingsland' which is incorrect. I cannot decipher what it should be though. 1901 says Hackney - have you tried contacting Hackney RD? Try: The Town Hall, Mare Street, Hackney, London, E8 1EA. Tel: 020 8356 3493. Liz

I think it is Kingsland, the ing is very similar to the ing in Birmingham on the next page. Some info at http://www.eolfhs.org.uk/parish/kingsland.htm
