Establishing if a couple were married

I haven't had to produce my marriage cert when my sons were registered. If the father of the children was NOT the husband, he had to be present to be added to the cert. But if the woman lied about being married to the father there would be no way of checking. nell

By the looks of it, John was a navvy and moved around the country wherever there was a tunnel to dig. No two kids born in the same place. But there were only a handful of Louisa Easons in the country -- the odds against two of them both marrying John Popes are astronomical.

Thanks you guys had found the N.Bierley couple myself. Yes bloke was John Pope but in 1901 census Louisa's place of birth was given as Crewkerne, Somerset and his Bourton, Somerset. Strange thing is I have an elderly cousin (86) who we've always called uncle out of respect and I found out recently that his name was Eason. He thinks his father had a sister Louisa but remembers other siblings quite well. I've found his family in all census' 1851 - 1901 and no sign of Louisa. Not many strands left now - pulling hair out bit by bit - but struggling on. Thanks to all DAL sorry forgot to add 1st child born 1893 Cardiff - falls in line with uncle Bill as their family had moved from Crewkerne and were living in Cardiff in 1891 and 1901 census.

That is very interesting, Kate, as I have a couple who I haven't been able to find a marriage for, but who registered at least one of their children as if they were married. Maybe they were just telling porkies.

I have 3 birth from the 1940's were it looks like the mother was married to the father and the mother registed the births. I know for a fact they were never married so I guess if it could happen in the 1900's it could happen earlier. I was never asked to produce my marriage certificate when I registered my childrens births, the registra asked our names but never asked if we were married.

Not sure about the birth certs Dorothy, not sent for mine yet, re similar problem but I did find that my g grandfather was actually married to someone else, the marriage obviously did not work and he met my g gran and they lived together pretty much as people do today. They had three children together and she called herself Mrs and widow when he died. He had not been dead five minutes when his legal wife up and re-married. I don't think any of the children knew, as it never came down the family. I found out through my own research. Must get their certs though? Lin

Dorothy, some of my relatives definitely registered their children in this way even though they were not married. For instance, my great-grandfather's sister registered her daughter's birth and gave her name as Ann Jane Wheeler, formerly Bristow, but her death was registered (by her mother, who would know!) as Ann Jane Bristow, spinster. And I never found a marriage for her, and her supposed husband married somebody else while she was still alive. Similarly, my great-grandfather's first few children were all registered by their mother under the name Jessie Bristow, formerly Clark, but I have never found a marriage and again, the children's father married somebody else while their mother was still alive. And the years when this happened are just when you are asking about. So yes, it is possible that they were not married. And they would not have to show their marriage cert when registering the child's birth. Kate.

I'm looking for details of my g.grandparents marriage. Have searched records but drawing a complete blank. Have now obtained 3 birth certs. of some of their children, where it asks for mother, all 3 are the same i.e. Louisa Pope formerly Eason. My understanding is this could not be added unless a marriage cert. was produced. Am I right or wrong. Please help. Talking about late 1880's and 1890's. Thanks Dorothy
