Will it be worth ordering a certificate?

I have found my GG gandfather's first marriage recorded on Free BMD, but the placename is in italics (it says Fareham, when it should have been Farnham) and there isn't a female with the same place of marrige on the page. The names listed with his name look like it is from an indistinct record. (m. 1880 Edgar Brisk Letts - on the 1881 census his wife is Sarah) Does this mean that if I order the marriage certificate for this entry I would not get the info? Does Free BMD work from the same documents as the GRO? Any help you can give me ( and to stop me wasting money) would be great. Thanks

Fareham is in Hampshire and Farnham Surrey. If you order the certificate you should get the right information. Ive done it twice now when the partner hasn't been listed Sheila

On FreeBMD, I requested all marriages for people called Sarah in Farnham District in Q2 1880. Here are the results: Marriages Jun 1880 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Harford Sarah Farnham 2a 151 MUGGERIDGE Sarah Maud Farnham 2a 12_ MUNDY Sarah Ann Farnham 2a 136 Newland Sarah Farnham 2a 137 Trusler Sarah Farnham 2a 129 The first one has the same page number as your man, so expect this is her. Maybe you could look for Sarah Harford on the 1871 census? (to see if her date and place of birth match with Mrs Letts) Merry

The italics means the transcriber wasn't exactly sure,it was probably a bad image.Try entering the details without his name-Quarter,year District code and page number, everyones whose details free bmd have will then show up.

I think the fact that the place name is in italics means that the transcriber wasn't sure what it said. You could check the image yourself for free by looking on FreeBMD where it says Images. Just follow the instructions for each person given and you can make your own decisions as to what it says. Of course, the only way to be absolutely sure is to order the cert or look in the parish registers. Jeanette x

YOU LOVELY, WONDERFUL, BRILLIANT LOT! Thank you ever so much! I'd missed the fact that I could search for a Sarah married in Farnham in 1880. I'd been weeks tying to work out how to find her maiden name and you've all done it in a couple of minutes! Thank you all so much and I wish you all success with your own brick walls! Trudi XXX
