You could try googling, or contacting the relevant county records office/Customs & Excise. nell

Thanks, Nell . This great uncle of mine is proving a puzzle !-Was told he was 'in charge ' at Glasgow Docks-now I`ve been told he worked for Customs and Excise. I`ve written to so many places for info -answers employ a researcher. Ros

Ros Beware of what you are told! I was told that my great-great uncle Thomas was 'in charge of Tilbury docks'. Well, when I inquired, it turns out he was an assistant fireman there for a few years! This is the same chap that described his milk carrier father as a 'provisions merchant' on his marriage cert, so I think he was a bit of a spinner of tall tales and inclined to exaggerate his status. nell

It was my Dad who said it about him! But he was obviously high up as he was Lt. Commander RNR, Ros

As he had a senior title, I imagine there must be records of him somewhere. Have you tried googling? nell

TNA has Customs & Excise records, including some that concern staff. Not sure if they'll be of use to you, but have a peek at this: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=234
