How Can I Find His Birth?

I am trying to find my cousins birth on FreeBMD without luck. I know he was born either August or September 1970 in Rotherham Maternity Hospital and I was given his first name as Paul but can't find him under my aunt's maiden name or her married name at the time or any other name for that matter! He was adopted shortly after his birth. Any advice on what I'm doing wrong? Jayne x

As it's a fairly recent birth - do you want to pm me the details - names etc. and I will have a look for you? Dea x

FreeBMD doesn't cover as far as 1970, it only has coverage to about 1914. you need to check the GRO indexes on Ancestry (free at the moment) or subscribe to 1837online. Sam x

Freebmd is only partially completed and doesnt go up to that sort of date anyway, you need to look at ancestry bmd index beta

Hi Jayne, Have you search around that date? If he was born in Aug/Sept you need to check Sept/Dec 1/4's and March/June 1971 as well as the birth may not have been registered until months after the actual birth. Suzanne

Thanks Dea, I've PM'd you. I've checked from 1965 to 1975 (although I'm 99% certain he was born in 1970 as my Mum said I was only a few months old when he was born which was March 1970. Thanks everyone. Jayne x

Just an update - phoned GRO today to order birth certificate which Dea very kindly got me the reference for and was told that if I had his date of birth wrong - even by a day - they won't let me have the certificate! Apparently because he was adopted there's no give and take on this. All I have to go on is Mum's memory so keep your fingers crossed for me. Jayne x
