Just to emphasise how good these places really are. I sent off for three certificates from Ribble Valley Office in Lancashire on Saturday - today I have received two back. Not only are they efficient but I receieved photo copies of the originals entries onto modern looking certificates plus photocopies of the original entries themselves. Because of the service at GRO at the moment (through no fault of their own I might add) I would definitely recommend using these offices instead. Snowdrops |

Lincoln copy the entries as a matter of routine. The cost from a local office is the same as GRO except they may add £1 if you pay by credit card, you don't pay additional postage (from my experience) However i often place postal applications and enclose an A4 size SAE,just so as to receive an unfolded cert back. For the cost of a stamp and envelope it ensures a pristine cert leaving the office, theo it's down to the postal service to do the rest! A full list of local offices, with contact details listed on Genuki,a quick call to an office will tell you if you get a typed/handwritten 2006 version or a photocopy of the original register. The only drawback are the London offices, very likely to say GRO option only Glen |

Hi Cas I've found each office different in what they are prepared to send out. I only expect a copy certificate - anything above and beyond that is an added bonus. If you are lucky enough to have a bmd site dedicated to your area of research (I have lancashirebmd(.)org(.)uk and same with Yorkshire) you may find your relatives on there. It's then a simple matter of printing off the form with their details already on it and then adding your own details and your payment - regular £7 just as per the GRO. If you go to the Lancashire address as given above it will direct you to other sites which are available. Glen - I always send an SAE, some places request it, others don't. You can of course go yourselves and photocopy the entries much cheaper - for instance I went to Northallerton the other week and got 25 photocopes at 40p each costing £10 in total. If I had requested a proper certificate for each of them it would have cost me £175 - some saving!!!!!!!!! Snowdrops |

Er... you can only photocopy (or print from microfilm / fiche) church wedding entries, in the record office or library, surely? As far as I know you can't go into a register office and photocopy the birth, marriage or death certificates!! Only the staff can do that and they will charge you £7. Kate. |

I have purchased copies of certs from Tower Hamlets because lots of my ancestors came from that area. They are very good and it does not take long to receive your certificate. The cost is £7 and if they cannot find your entry they return your cheque. You need to send a s.a.e. I must admit I have never been there in person and requested a certificate. Irene |
