Hi A while back my dad very excitedly told me that the Mormon group had provided ancestry information, available on the internet. has anyone heard of it, or is my dad barking up the wrong tree? I'm hoping to find somewhere where I can find ancesters pre-1837. I've got back so far on one of my branches and am now stuck. it's like no one existed before about 1781!!!!! Thank you

This is the LDS site - http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp if you just put the surname in and nothing else you will get all they have on bmd for BG Europe Australia USA and others .... all will show in a panel on the right of the page. To get a breakdown try the IGI - also one of theirs which isolates the name to a region (one of those shown on the above Search) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true Take their information as a guide and confirm it with archives later. Births are generally Baptism dates. Also take care as information shown does not cover ALL events only those they have been given.

Not only that, but throughout the country there are various LDS centers where you can look at parish records on microfilm or order ones they don't have. There's one opposite the Science Museum in London and I found lots of my relatives there. nell

We generally end up having to buy Marriage certificates. =- if you find a better way let us know ! or you can get copies of the marriage entry in the Parish Registers - cheaper !

I ordered a marriage certificate a couple of weeks ago as I'm aware that it's the best way to be 100% sure that all information is correct. unfortunately I'm still waiting for it and it's sooooo frustrating. The marriage certificate is from one of my more recent ancestors but I've ploughed on regardless. I've probably got all the wrong people in my tree knowing my luck!!!!!!

If you know the husband's full name, search for a marriage in his name on the IGI part of the familysearch.org site, and it'll usually give you the wife's maiden name. You can also search under his surname only if you don't know the full name, but you can't specify the date in that case. If you don't know his name, and the marriage is post-1837, search on the FreeBMD site; put in the husband's surname, leaving his christian name blank, and enter the wife's Christian name under 'spouse first name'.

By the way, does anyone what records the various LDS centres keep? I live in Italy, and I was wondering if an Italian centre would have access to English records.

If there's an LDS site in Italy you can probably find details from the familysearch website. But I understand that they can order film from the Salt Lake City vaults. nell
