I'd say if you're hoping to find a match you must use the new name, because that's the name that any descendants will use. If any of them are searching on GR they might not even know the original name. Whatever you do, don't include the old name in brackets after the new name as this will prevent anyone finding it, as has already been mentioned. Andrew. |

I changed my name by deed poll about 10 years ago and the 2 children that were still at home and under 16. On my tree i use my maidan name and my childrens birth name but i have put notes to say that there names were changed by deed poll . Cath |

I have the same problem. I have used their birth name and only use the new name for the children that have been registered with it. I have four branches that changed their name by deed poll, the good thing is that it helps to prove they were from the same family as they chose the same name. |

If you put their name as Brown (smith) I doubt you will get anyone else finding them on here. I have an ancestor whose maiden name is unknown. I have her entered on my tree as Diana (Goddard) but if you search for Diana Goddard she doesn't come up. Personally, in your situation I would put them in under their birth name. |

Ive just had to do that with a whole line of Groves who were Graves from 1851 backwards. Pain isnt it. Ive put the name in brackets like Richard |

I put the later surname in brackets and then the original surname: eg: 'John (Brown) Smith' for someone who was born a Smith and then changed his name to Brown later in life. That's just my own convention though - I don't know if that's standard practice or not. Richard |

My husband's grandfather and his brother changed their name in 1917. I put the orginal name prior to that and only those actually born with the new name with the one they use now. |

if a family changed their name by Deed Poll which would you put on the Tree their original or their new one, as I suppose when you think about it if I was hoping for a Match maybe the people would not know their new name ?? what would others do thanks Just going to do the Wifely thing and cook back later thanks |
