Why can't the men in my family stick to one wife?? Just descovered the 1st wife of George Hawkes of Chesham (I was surprised how it came to be that he had a sone in 1850 but married his wife in 1855..) but this is besides my question really. George (although losing a few years to his age...) has stayed at the same residence throughout all the censuses (1851 with his 1st wife & 1 son; 1861 with his 2nd wife and 3 more 2 more sons; 1871 with 2nd wife still, 4 sons and now daughters... etc) It made it a little easier for me to keep track of him! As I can't find his birth record on ancestry I decided to have a look at the names in the other houses on the street. In 1861 i found: -Martha Hawkes abt 1794 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Head Chesham Buckinghamshire A widow who I suspect to be his mother. Any suggestions how I can check this out - I can't find any BMD records for her... and if I'm right I'd obviously like to find her husband's name! It appears that the census before in 1851 she was living in a different part of town with a couple of other children. Any ideas if I can check if this is the same woman? Now that I'm hitting the end of the censuses and the BMD records that I'm used to using I'm looking for other means to track back? Thank you everyone and I'm sorry it's such a long query!!

when was George Hawkes, born and where. you could try searching on the IGI for mother and father's marriage, and birth/baptism

I am searching through those now. It's a bit odd, I expected that as we're only going on surname I would maybe see his siblings and children but it I don't seem to have found any of them...

Hmm I can't seem to find any of them (george, his offspring or their offspring) in the birth records section on igi in the areas that I expected to find them (as I said they have lived in the same street for decades!) Anyone any other suggestions as to where I can look?

In 1851 there was a dau Hannah Hawkes b about 1835 at Lee Bucks. There is this on the IGI (Lee is less than two miles from Great Missenden): HANNAH HAWKES Female Event(s): Birth: Christening: 01 JUN 1834 Great Missenden, Buckingham, England Parents: Father: WILLM. HAWKES Mother: MARTHA Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. Merry

There are some more baps which might be Hannah's siblings, plus a marriage of William Hawkes to a Martha Avis at Great Missenden in 1812, which is worth making a note of! Merry

Yes I did find Hannah, but no record of George and as I still haven't proven that martha is his mother - only suspect it as they lived close by in the 1861 census - it's a very long shot. I have quite a few Hawkes' in my tree now (it is my mother's maiden name) and they all lived in gt missenden and chesham area (most of my mother's siblings still do!) but i have been unable to find ANY of their birth records... i don't understand... especially as my grandfather swore his family were all registered at st mary's church - the church to which church lane refers to - the street they live on... but if anyone has notied any of my other messages, my grandfather was a bit of a fantasist! I did find a george born in 1834 (most censuses suggest my george was born 1831, although one suggests it was 1834) and his parents were job and mary... according to the census records i have seen: 1851: >>George Hawkes abt 1831 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Head Chesham Buckinghamshire - Caroline Hawkes abt 1831 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Wife Chesham Buckinghamshire - Samuel Hawkes abt 1850 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire 1861: >>George Hawkes abt 1833 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Head Chesham Buckinghamshire - Phoebe Hawkes abt 1836 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Wife Chesham Buckinghamshire - Samuel Hawkes abt 1850 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - Charles Hawkes abt 1852 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - George Hawkes abt 1856 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - Arthur Hawkes abt 1860 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire 1871: >>George Hawkes abt 1827 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Head Chesham Buckinghamshire - Phoebe Hawkes abt 1835 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Wife Chesham Buckinghamshire - Samuel Hawkes abt 1851 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - Charles Hawkes abt 1853 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - George Hawkes abt 1856 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - Arthur Hawkes abt 1860 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - Clara Kate Hawkes abt 1864 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Daughter Chesham Buckinghamshire - Elizabeth Hawkes abt 1866 Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England Daughter Chesham Buckinghamshire - Herbert Hawkes abt 1868 Son Chesham Buckinghamshire - Ernest Hawkes abt 1870 Son Chesham Buckinghamshire As you can see, George's ages seems to vary more than just the 1 year here or there, and he remarries between 1851 and 186. I do have the marriage record for him and phebe (pheobe) and i do have all the other census records for this family. I just don't have any of their birth records... most importantly George's - as his age varies so much. To be honest, I nearly missed that it was all the same family as george remarries and changed his age so much. if it wasn't for samuel and the address being the same
