Not sure i understand but to open a gedcom file you need a family history software programme, PAF or family Tree Maker for example. Heather

Linda I'm a bit puzzled by your 'gedcom from the IGI' so hope I haven't misled you. Heather

will try and explain but bear with me if I sound thick :) went on to IGI and found the marriage of one of my ancestors, at the bottom it gives you the source cell number etc, so i went onto that and it said about downloading file so I did, but when I tried to open it I couldn't. does that makes sense? after seeing the other GED message on this board can I state now I am not trying to copy anyone elses tree but find infomation on one of my ancestors marriage

That error message comes up whenever you try to open a file (by double-clicking on it) and the file extension (in this case GED) is not associated with a particular program If you have family tree software installed, this will usually be associated with GED files when you install it, so that when you try to open a Gedcom file it will automatically run in that software. If you have a family tree program installed but are still getting the above error, then start the program and then import the Gedcom file. If not, then you can download PAF from the familysearch site (free). You can also open Gedcoms in Notepad, though you might not be able to make much sense of the data that way! Richard

aah thank you, I opened it with notepad but doesn't really tell me any more info than on IGI, I was just worried I was missing something. I don't have family tree software yet, am new to this so just using the tree on here at the moment. I'm going to treat myself to one at the weekend

Linda - the Gecdoms that you download from IGI don't have any more info than is displayed on the website. I think that they just give people the gedcom option so that you can download and import the data directly into your tree, without having to type it up again. Can't do this on GR though - a gedcom import to here will wipe all your existing data, it won't merge the info! Software such as Family Tree Maker gives you a merge option though. Richard
